This book satirizes the idea of existentialism and religion. Based off the radio series the previous year. With the spread of atheism during the middle of the 20th century this book mocks the idea of God and the meaning of life made this book extremely popular.
Jennings, G. (2005). The hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. 
This movie was a recreation of the radio series and book series. Garth Jennings wanted to recreate Douglas Adam’s book/radio series. Being from England around the same time this series came out it is possible that he was inspired by it.
