Sandman One Page Analysis: "I am Hope"

  1. I think your argument, based off of this page alone, could focus on the time and panel transitions. Some of the panels, like you pointed out, basically overflow into previous and following panels which could portray the fatality of their choice. Also, something could be said about the brightness of Choronzon's interpretation of "anti-life". Why is it so bright? Usually life is depicted as bright where as anti-life (or death) would be darker.

  2. You could argue that the lack of space between the panels and how they overlap, could symbolize the cascade of events that's occurring. In other words the urgency and importance felt by the Sandman to end the duel with the demon and retrieve his helmet of power. You could also argue that the absence of a background is purposely done, to guide the reader's focus onto the demon and Sandman. There is an abundance of straight diagonal lines among the panels, as McCloud claims that they incorporate change and dynamics, so you could argue that they highlight the change in power dynamics occurring between the demon and Sandman as he wins the duel. You could also point out that the presence of the demon Azazel in the top right corner is foreshadowing of upcoming events.
