Syntagmatic:
Normal calm
day for 2 juvenile delinquents, digging holes in the hot sun, looking off to
the distance at something interesting.
Mood: Calm,
tiresome, get the vibe that they have been working all day.
Outfits:
Cons, orange jumpsuits, rags and hats on their heads to protect them from the
sun, hands probably blistered from digging all day.
Thoughts:
There probably thinking ”What’s that over there?” “Someone is coming?”
Present Day-
Paradigmatic:
We change the actor of Zero and replace him with Miley Cyrus
dancing crudely, and this really changes the perspective we see of Shia La
Beouf. He goes from looking off into the distance, and wondering what he is
looking at to saying “WTF am I watching?” and his expression changes
paradigmatically. We don’t see him as squinting into the sunlight anymore as he
looks off in to the distance, we see him more as disgusted and grossed out by
the performance Miley is putting on. He no longer cares that he is in the hot
sun or deprived of water, hell he’d rather dig a hole than watch anymore of her
performance. Yes, the stereotype is that men sexually attracted to women in
lingerie, and the more skin shown the better, but Shia quickly disproves this
stereotype with his disgusted emotion. With society now these types of
performances are sadly becoming more and more acceptable, back in 2003 this
would not have been acceptable.
This is funny. You should also consider what they were previously talking about and actually looking at. So what would happen is what they were really looking at was replaced with this while using the same diction from the film.
ReplyDeleteThe example you give does change the meaning of the expression Shia is giving. You chose an excellent image to replace Zero with, as many people disapprove of Miley's performance, and Shia is no different. Just like many of us can relate to, Shia is disgusted by what he is watching; which is Miley's performance.
ReplyDeleteHowever, try experiment with other images that don't have to do with something disgusting, as it would be interesting to see if they too change Shia's expression paradigmatically.
Replacing Zero with Miley changes the situation a lot! the meaning of Shia's expression does change dramatically. Maybe you could argue that he's disgusted by the sight of Miley not just because it was gross, but also because he hasn't seen a woman's body like that since he's been at the camp.
