Palomar Page Analysis

  1. The detail of the background characters in the first frame are more detailed than any of the other characters. This is because the author finds it important that they are disgusted or afraid of the disfigured man. That is emphasized later in the frame three with the child's line. You noted that the abstraction in frame four is lower than any other frame. In my interpretation, this is the author's way of downplaying the importance of the moment right before the WHAM!

  2. I agree that the detail of the characters' faces is emphasized to show the true reaction to the disfigured man. It seems as though the author means to pay special attention to the general reaction of society towards disfigurement and difference. Separately, it can be seen that there is significantly less detail in panel 4. Perhaps this serves as a set-up for the intensity of the proceeding panel; perhaps this lack of detail also serves to "cleanse the palate" in a sense, shifting focus from the disfigured man and peoples' reactions to him to the next subject in the story.

  3. In this section it is also interesting how the author portrays a lot of shadow casting and uses more black than in other sections. He also seems to build a ton of focus on the women and their power, he portrays Chello and Luba as a more dominant role towards Miguel. This scene also contains a lot of vicious acts on the spur of the moment with the slapping on the following page.

  4. You can analyze a lot of the movement in this section to show how the characters are interacting with each other. The movement in these panels shows a lot about what is going on and how the characters feel, from Vincente moving his hat, to Pipo getting hit.
