Beauty and the Beast vs. Beastly Semiotic Data

Syntagmatic Relationship:
In this original picture from Beauty and the Beast, we can clearly see that Belle is scared or frightened of something. In fact, this is the scene where she clearly sees the beast for the first time, when she is taking the place of her father. All of the signs of being frightened or scared are extremely apparent in this still frame; enlarged eyes, brows distraught, shoulders shrugged, and the hand over her mouth. This picture also shows her femininity, she had dainty hands, her face is slightly flushed, and a tiny nose. Her mood is startled, surprised, scared, and terrified.

Syntagmatic Relationship:
This picture is of the same scene, but in the movie Beastly. As you can see from the picture, Lindy (the Belle equivalent), does not seem near as shocked to see the beast, which is Kyle, as Belle did in the previous pictures. Lindy seems to be more understanding and more considerate of his looks than Belle was when she first saw the beast. All of the classic signs of being scared or terrified, are not there, Lindy actually looks rather calm in this shot.
