Semiotics data Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Semiotics is the study of signs, or in the way I like to think of it, hidden messages that are placed within a film, whether it is intended for that meaning or not. Signs and messages are hidden all over in films, from the differences in color, or differences in things that the characters wear. Along with the many cultural differences and changes from the 1974 and 2013 there is also semiotic changes. In scary movies such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I find that it easier to point out all the changes that may occur. We've seen how usually light colors mean something good, and darker contrasted colors symbolize someone is bad or something bad might happen in the scene. When scary parts come up the scene is typically darker, and the extremes of sound are revealed, it goes from being very quiet to loud, and making you jump out of your seat.
One thing that I would like to point out in the 2013 movie is, we see a big cultural change. First, we have a African American man, who in the movie is a cheater, and doesn't survive very long at all. And second, we have girls who are less conservative than the ones that appear in the 1974 movie. With one of the main characters being African American, I think that it goes to show that improvement dealing with racism has gotten better since the 70's but is still present somewhat, considering they made his character unfaithful and then ended his life fairly quick, which stereotypically happens to all African Americans or blonde characters because the media has taught us that they are less intelligent than the rest of society.
