Semiotics

To me there are not many differences between karate kid in 1984 and 2010 they almost have the exact same storyline both of the main characters are minorities that have a girl they meet and really like they meet an early enemy and end defeating them in a big tournament. I feel to truly see the difference in age you have to look at the actual setting and what is going on during that time when they were made. Four example in the 80s it was an era of surfers in mainly preppies who were focused on status and power. And during the 2010 release we had just had the Olympics in Beijing which brought a lot of interest in the Chinese culture which made it very easy for them to do the movie in China. Also in the 80s there was a big movement for his Hispanics and how they were fighting for rights while in the 2010s like we are in now there are a lot of black rights movements. These two things I feel explains why the race changes in each movie and although they are really close scene to scene they are different as far as the setting.

  1. I can see that you have a start to a really good argument. But, to add more to your argument you could also talk about how in the 1984 movie the "wax on and wax off" was a big deal but in the 2010 movie it was more about kicking a bell. I don't really know if there is a reasoning behind that change but it could definitely be something to look into.
