Two pages before the first page you chose to analyze Maika says "Stay here, Kippa, and keep praying." clearly not wanting Kippa to see the dead soldiers. The author potentially did that to give Kippa an opportunity to be "traumatized" by something in order to mature and grow psychologically.
on panel 2 of page 1, I would argue that the abstraction would be more towards the right than the left. especially considering we don't have a good vantage point of their face.
