"Land of Confusion" Music Videos (marching soldiers & Man of Steel)

In this analysis, there are two points of reference that are important in my opinion, in order to tangent off to dig deeper towards a political distinction which is what the two music videos attain their true distinction from each other though the lyrics are exactly the same. The Genre and Social History are relevant within the context that I construct the meanings of  syntagmatic, anchorage, articulation, and paradigmatic discourse functioned within the works of the music videos.

The top screenshot of the video from Genesis' Land of Confusion, is portraying the soldier or soldiers who are "marching of feet" as lyrically stated by the band in puppet form as that is how the whole video's characters take physical form, including the main character being Ronald Reagan. The bottom screenshot presents the same content of the lyrical statement given from the original song, but this time, from the desired portraying by Disturbed's cover song.

In these two images, there is a portrayal of the lyrical statement given in both songs being, "oh superman, where are you now?" which in the first image on the top from Genesis original version, they are putting Ronald Reagan in puppet formation, into the man of steel's appearance. The man of steel's point of reference within the Disturbed's version, is given to the band's main representational character in order to show a different kind of message within its context apprehended.

Syntagmatic relationship- Within this platform of analysis, the immediate signs presented would be the most universally known/american known super hero, being the S for the Man of Steel or just the outfit colors itself in the formation they are in. And within the soldier scenes, we are limited with just combat boots striking heavily through trenches in the Genesis video, which is widely referred to as soldier's notions. The other shot given from Disturbed's version of "marching of feet" would be the militia formation given which is another form that is distinctive as soldiers taking action or preparing in general.
Anchorage- In the case of the soldiers marching, the anchorage is not heavily packed as pop culture reference is limited, but there is enough given in order to present that there is an understanding of distinction between old and new. The 1980's version of the song and the 2005 version holds relevance of advancements in technology which is presented throughout the use of solider's combat boots, to then the whole essence of an army and their military advanced image. Within the context of the Man of Steel being referred to, the anchorage is at a high point being that Superman is a multi cultured super hero that has been cultivated throughout time itself and is a compelling sign that works within the changing of problems dealt with politically in the 1980's to then the late 1990's to early 2000's.
Paradigmatic- In this analysis formation, there is much that is drawn out from just these two comparisons. From a political perception, there is a switch in how Ronald Reagan had seemed to be the star that appeared to be the man who would take leverage of the problems America had been in, but at times seemed as if the celebrity/political figure had other forms of star stigma platforms that he had a higher attraction towards and is the "man of steel" who does not necessarily have the leverage needed to confine the problems shown at least within just the video that portrays several deficiencies from America's problems. This is a turnover in the Disturbed's hard rock version, which shows both the soldiers transitioned into a darker but more engineered formation in order to attribute to the newer version and the "man of steel" being Disturbed's overall message which is the common man needing to overcome the corruption of the government's policies that creates poverty and other societal issues that continue to be played from the manipulation of "the man" in hard rock terms.
Articulation- The web of signs are pressed within the usage of The Man of Steel reference in both of the videos. As stated, there is a true distinction on how the superman forms are characterized and meant to be interpreted within the discourse that is packaged within the particular music video it is portrayed in. An audience response would be characterized from the different political references that are given from different visual representations with one being through a 1980's creepy puppet form, and the changed version being from an early 2000's animation with a dark/grunge essence still at hand as well as the exact same lyrics for both of these points of the song.
