“Kick off the Sunday
shoes”
1984- women
·
In 1963 congress passed a law mandating equal
pay for both genders (just 19 years earlier)
·
In 1981- first women appointed to the US
Supreme Court (progress, yet still set back)
·
Women in the 1984 film were not a vocal, more
submissive and had less value
·
Symbol- Red boots signify rebellion
|
2011- women
·
Between 1984 and 2009 the number of working
women in America increased from 44 million to 72 million
·
Violence against women was taken more serious
·
Symbol- Red boots signify rebellion
|
1984- Teens car crash
·
The crash is never actually shown
·
This was the peak of teen deaths due to
drunk/distracted driving
·
References to alcohol
·
MADD founded in 1980- this issue was just
beginning to get attention
|
2011- Teens car crash
·
The wreck is the very first scene in the movie
·
Drunk/distracted driving has dramatically
decreased since 1980- more awareness
·
Also could be due to less teen drivers on the
road
|
1984- Dance you ass off
·
Dancing was a lot different during this time
but it still had the same meaning
·
They were dancing for a purpose; change, the
right to be young
|
2011- Dance your ass off
·
The dance style in this movie is much more
seductive
·
The t-shirt shown in both films serves the
same purpose as the red boots
|
1984- Lets diversify!
·
Was there a reason that the original was
filmed with only white actors and actresses?
·
I don’t know… but they definitely didn’t film
the remake in the same way
|
2011- Done!
·
This version made a point to add a diverse
group of actors and actresses to the film

Thesis: The original Footloose portrays
many of the social dilemmas that people were facing during the 1980s accompanied
with a teen rebellion focused on the right to be young and experience life. The
adaptation of this film reevaluates the position of women in society and the
effects of teen choices at that young age.
Semiotics: The media portrays societal
beliefs and standards through media and pop culture. These movies both depict how
these ideals change over time.
Overall, this looks good, very easy to read and pinpoint the important data. Although, I would have liked to see some more elaboration rather than just bullet points. I am excited to see what your presentation consists of.
