Outline:
- Attention getter
- Intro/overview:
Explain the context of both songs, including year, genre, and of course the nature of the artists/bands. Then give the preview of presentation.
- Preview: (Preview slide)
"Today I will elaborate on both of the songs in the order of it's..."
- Lyrics: (lyrics slide)
Abusive Politial authority heavy.
Both songs use their video content in order to present the platform needed for it's given time in their own way.
(Blank slide) "so what is the essential point of the adaptation as a whole in these music videos specifically? Well specifically, both have their own discourse in order to make you take the perception that is intended to create."
- Thesis (Thesis slide)
The semiotic structure that is unitentionally created from the works of both of the music videos being relevant, is a function that only works with specific signs and characters that are political, pop culture based, and appealing from a rhythm musically in its own wake of timeline or era.
This then leads to syntagmatic Relationship in order for the videos to be completely perceived works under the format of signifying signs in its visual content, to then being comprehended by applying it to social order to be signified correctly from the listener and viewer of the video.
-(transition slide) "This is done primarly through the works of genre and social history working compatible for the driving points and emotions made from each version of the song through song genre and visual content within its particular time."
- Genre/ social history
In genesis version there is True pop music portrayed through puppets. A more “hip” vibe in total, revealing its message to the generally involved public in the sense of politics.
In disturbed version there is Hard rock music portrayed through animated characters. The outreach is intended for all heavy rock listeners to create the breakout emotional appeal it does with its strong sound, constructing leverage for the audience’s connection, primarily the common working man in America.
(transition slide) but in order to get how in the videos play true effect to each of the discourses, you would have to know what is in each one visually.
Visual content:
in genesis Ronald Reagan is everywhere (come back to again later)
puppets are the whole video, no real human characters --> it gives a freakish/eerie vibe that is still compliant somehow with its musical genre.
Futuristic(for its time) props such as the glasses the band has on.
(change slides to disturbed visual content)
in disturbed More advanced and modern visuals given but through use of cartoon, so no real humans given either. --> effective to audience as well with musical genre.
Hard rock built off of depression and the visuals are compliant with that point with references of darkness in modern time.
Disturbed's figure/mascot is leader that fights "the man" or government corrupted, representing common working man.
(change slide to numerical data)
According to Shazam--> Disturbed's music video has been viewed tremendouly more than genesis, which may have to do with more who appeal to the newer song because it has been more often recorded as "sounding better", yet both songs are usually liked evenly, but the hard rock content just may have that much more effect.
(transition slide) "Paradigmatic relationships are also what drive the point of the distinctions between the two music videos in the case that each video has its own signs and characters that it must have for it to have the effect it has and if it doesn't, then it isnt going to be perceived as intended at least politcally."
- Paradigmatic relations
For Genesis, "the man of steel" that is reffered to in its version, is pointed to Ronald Reagan, which int the time of the 1980's, would of course receive major flack in several ways possible, and in the case of the song, it is intended to be a sarcastic or mocking version of the president at the time. If Ronald Reagan would not be in the video, then its discourse carried, would not be of any effect to the audience.
The same goes for Disturbed's hard rock version, being that if government corruption or manipulation of the common man was not reffered towards in the video, then it would just sound like a regular hard rock song, and not soaked in captivation that it had heavily on the audience who watched the video, especially the hard working class society. The "man of steel" for Disturbed's video is the articulation switched to be signs that carry actual meaning of overcoming government misuse, which works effecient with it's musical genre.
(Switch slides to conclusion/takeaway) "The overall meaning that both song versions create are key points to societal backgrounds in their own time. They work in semiotic functions in order for each of its own song to be signfied and interpreted in their own particular way which peculiar to me as they use the exact same lyrics but are driven through their own genres and social histories that are able to captivate different responses but the same emotional appeal."
