Stephen King's It - Outline

Outline:

Intro:
  • In the movie It, the main focus of the film is the horror plotline, but within the subtext, there is a lot of depth within the individual characters. The character Richie Tozier is represented as the type of person that uses his humor to cope with his problems, as well as to hide from his true self. I'm Hannah Herbold and I will be discussing the comparisons between gay representation in movies in 1990 versus 2019 in regards to Richie Tozier from Stephen King's It.
Body:
  • On-screen representation of gay men in the 80s and 90s
  • Why Richie Tozier was not represented as a gay man in the 1990 version
  • the social context of gay men in media
  • How Richie's character was developed in the 2019 version
  • Interview with Bill Hader (the actor who plays Richie)
  • the social context for gay representation now
  • How adding that depth of character to Richie affects the plot of the movie
Social History:
  • homophobia in the 80s and 90s
  • aids epidemic
  • limitations of what you can put in films in regards to gay representation
  • social acceptance of LGBT in recent history
Conclusion:
  • While we still have a long way to go in terms of equality of representation in media, the way Richie is represented in It is something that is not often seen in films.
