Analyzing T'Challa in the Ancestral Plane

Analyzing Black Panther
T'challa visits his father in the Ancestral Plane

In this scene, T'Challa is put through a ceremony he visits the ancestral plane, where he meets his father once again. The gravity of this scene is found in the deep emotions of these shots. T'Challa collapses out of guilt for his father who died in Captain America: Civil War. T'Chaka reassures T'Challa that he is a fine and strong man who can do his duties as a king without him. The emotional weight of this scene is one that had not been given much focus in T'Challa's character arc. The reassurance of his father also gives T'Challa the strength to take on the oncoming battle that will test his mettle. The heartfelt music and symbology of the edits in this scene translate the power of it. In my opinion its one of the strongest and most well-done scenes in the movie, I knew immediately that this was the scene I wanted to decipher

Camera Movement: Pedestal

In the shot when T’Challa falls to his knees, the camera moves in a pedestal shot, moving down with T’Challa to show his remorse and also make T’Chaka a more authoritative or holy figure above T’challa

Close Up

The Camera comes close to T’Challa to catch the shot of tears falling, as well as the obvious remorse on his face

Underexposed/Backlit

In the scene the area is darkly lit with this nighttime look to it, but the background has this angelic aurora borealis glow to it that gives a holy or celestial feeling to it

Offscreen/Onscreen sound

Diagetic/Non-Diagetic

T’Challa and his father have onscreen conversations for the most part, but at some points (Specifically this shot) T’Chaka’s voice is offscreen, combining with most of him being offscreen and above T’Challa as well to give this silent authoritative power to him. The music also begins to swell when T’Challa is told to rise by his father

Low/Eye level shots

When T’Challa kneels, he looks up at his father with a low shot, before rising and the scene transitioning to an eye level shot

Sound Bridge/Eye line

When T’Chaka speaks offscreen, the camera cuts to him a moment after for his statement before T’Challa and his father exchange glances throughout the conversation, triggering multiple eye line transitions

  1. I really like your chosen film segment, an idea for your thesis could be how strong a father and a sons relationship can be and how that bond can affect both sides, the father and the son

  2. I like that you chose this scene because of the emotional depth and intensity. Your charts focus on how the shot puts emphasis on the fervor of the scene breaks down your points really well.

  3. I think one thesis you could take from this scene and apply it could be, how this scene explains and shows the culture of these people and how important it is to them to communicate with the dead and show there cultural values and rituals.
