For the Final Project, I would like to gather a focus group to watch Enola Holmes. The film is based off a pre-existing YA Mystery Series, and is marketed as a feminist, or at the very least, female centric take on the Sherlock Holmes mythos, which most people are familiar with. I would like to examine the semiotic relationship between the movie and the books, the movie and Sherlock Holmes canon, and the semiotic relationships within the film itself. The film, interestingly, was sued for copyright before it’s release, where it was argued that the portrayal of Holmes as empathetic was a recent development and not present in Conan Doyle’s fictions, and I would like to work that incident in our after-film discussion.
I have easy access to the film on Netflix and seeing as it is brand new, I’m interested in the amount of people I can gather who will go in blind. I will most certainly be pulling mainly from the Dramatic Media Department, as there are a lot of us and that population is readily available to me- I could even reserve the studio theatre for viewing provided precautions are made for COVID safety. I may reach out to my roommate and her friends should they be available. Worst case scenario, I can gather friends for a discord/ google hangout showing.
I will have to do more research, but I think at the moment I am thinking of analyzing the portrayals of masculinity and femininity in the movie as it relates to both modern and historical contexts, and how well that is received by an audience in 2020.
