Wakanda Battle - Black Panther Returns - Black Panther

Okay friends, here is my brief analysis of the first two minutes of this four minutes and forty-nine-second clip. I have watched this clip on .5x speed like 10+ times now, I fear my brain is getting a bit sluggish but oh well, here we go.

In the first two minutes, there are approximately 35 cuts. Nothing exciting about them, no dissolves or anything like that, just regular cuts. But they are fast. On average a cut happens every 3.5 seconds (though they don't work out that way.)

Cuts happen at the following times:
0:17 0:23 0:28 0:30 0:44 0:45 0:47 0:48 0:50 0:53 0:55 1:02 1:05 1:08 1:13 1:16 1:18 1:20 1:22 1:24 1:27 1:28 1:29 1:31 1:32 1:35 1:38 1:41 1:42 1:44 1:46 1:47 1:49 1:51 2:00

1:42 - 1:44 → Medium longshot of soldiers' assembling their shields
1:44 - 1:46 → Medium longshot of the backs of the soldiers and their shields focus on Balck Panther in the background running towards them
1:46 - 1:47 → Longshot, Black Panther jumps over the shields, probably a crab/truck or a drone following the movement
1:47 - 1:49 → close up on Black Panther
1:49 - 1:51 → long shot on black panther and all of the soldiers flying in the air
1:51 - 2:00 → longshot of black panther throwing a spear at the plane/ship and subsequent plane/ship crashing, probably a crab/truck or a drone following the movement

Whew that was a lot... now let's take ALL of that and put it in table form shall we

Now for lighting and photography, the film seems to be low contrast/high key the whole time as well as being in a lovely 16x9 aspect ratio. The image quality is high res. Exposure is correct.

Most of the sound is diagetic, onscreen, external, simultaneous, and synchronous.

And that is it, I hope, for the beginning of this almost five-minute scene. I conclude my analysis here. I really hope I did this right.

  1. Hi Madeline! I admire your detail into separating all of the cuts (and watching the scene so many times). I think all this is missing is the impact the cuts have on someone watching it, and why the film directer chose to do it that way. Other than that, I loved your analysis!

  2. Hey Madeline, your analysis was very detailed and straightforward. I really enjoyed how organized your scene cuts are, it made it really easy to understand. I agree with Marthas comment, if you could have added what this scene made you feel with the cuts and maybe what the directors true intentions were for the audience.

  3. Hello Madeline, I really enjoy how you have put the times of the cuts and when each different techniques being used. One thing I think would make this better is to maybe explain what some the cuts meaning are to the movie and given a little deeper explanation of why that edit was chosen.
