The Intouchables (2011) vs The Upside (2017)

 Adaptations:

    The Intouchables (2011)

  • Driss, is the caretaker who had just got out of jail for robbery. His family at home consisted of his mom, siblings, and cousins. When Driss is first at Philippe's house, he steals a Fabergé egg. He also just wanted to apply for a job he knew he wouldn't get for a signature for his parol officer. Throughout the movie Driss looks after his cousin who had recently joined a gang.
  • Changing scenes there were jokes made about Driss.

    The Upside (2017)

  • Dell, had also just got out of jail, but he thought he was applying for a janitor job when he got thrown in the elevator on the way up to the penthouse. When he stormed into the office it was because he needed to pick up his son, and wanted proof he had at least came. Dell's character has a lot more focus on his life and relationship with his son.
  • Changing scenes there were "anatomy" jokes.

Social History:

    2011
  • "Thanks to the care he lavishes on Philippe, Driss plays the role of a nanny, a devoted servant who helps his master to regain his joie de vivre (in a Gallicised version of Uncle Tom). He is also the ‘buffoon’ whose way of relating to other people is to resort to ‘jibes’, as he shows when being interviewed for the job, and it literally elevates Driss to being the main comic ingredient of the film, as the other characters are content just to react to his jokes and verbal witticisms"

    2017
  • The first, and one of the last, scene in both movies starts out with close ups of both characters as the caregiver speeds down a road on a dark night. They inevitably get pulled over and in each case the officers that pull them over get aggressive with the caregiver. In both scenes the caregiver states they were trying to get to a hospital to get out of the predicament. 2017 is when the NFL had several athletes remain kneeling during the national anthem as a silent protest against racial violence, along with bias and profiling, by the police.
