 Life Of Bees

Clip #2

Clip #3

film  Techs I seen so far in bees

lighting

Note the way 3-point lighting works, first. The fill light removes shadows. The back light makes figures pop from the background.

low contrast/high key

The typical Hollywood bright lighting style.

\

high contrast/low key

The fill or backlight is brighter than usual:

 “Obie” or eye light

Bright light across the eyes, named for Merle Oberon’s use of it to disguise her scars after a car accident.

oddities

diagetic lights

“diagetic” is stuff inside the fictional world of the film

sound

These 5 pairs of terms can overlap and serve to differentiate kinds of sounds. For example, a voiceover is diagetic…

diagetic

Supposed to be in fictional world.

non-diagetic

Not supposed to be in the fictional world. Usually the soundtrack.

onscreen

We can see the source that is supposed to be making the sound.

offscreen

We can’t see it at the moment.

simultaneous

Sound takes place at the time of the action onscreen.

nonsimulataneous

Sound takes place at another time/place than the action.

synchronous

Matching the action on screen.

asynchronous

Not matching.

external

In the shared “real” diagetic world.

internal

Inside a character’s mind.

the shot

A shot is an uninterrupted sequence of film/video bounded by edits. Note that camera and/or actors can move or zoom, and any elements below can change as that happens.

focal depth/

implied proximity

Closer to people’s faces seems more intimate and “about” the character, usually.

extreme long shot/

establishing shot (XLS)

Bigger than characters. Places. Cities

but establishing a good wide area of the show of the girl the rocks the trucks and even the trees

long shot (LS)

Bigger than character, but also the spit coming from the live action shot of her showing the bees and where they came from or how they make honey

Lot of room in this shot

medium shot (MS)

showing everything  but not to wide to where we can't see the characters here we can see the window the curtin's and the picture frame near the statue

only showing top of her body

close up (CU)

very close up on her eyes and the glowing sun on her eyes telling us that where she is looking is bright or full of life

showing only her head

extreme close up (XCU)

A feature of the women face telling and showing us that she is angry and about to do something rash

only showing the head and neck

close on

Close up on where you can see both characters eyes smile and even wrinkes in their eye knowing that what type of angles that they want

where instead of on they are focusing on two actors in the same spot and area

  1. Hi Micah! INCREDIBLE work and analysis!!! I haven't seen this movie, but after watching the clip, I definitely want to! I agree with your decision to analyze the lighting, sound, and shot, considering those seem to be the main factors in constructing the scene's tone. I am unclear which scene you will use for your scene analysis because your chart includes information from three different ones. At some points in the scene, the shot angle is shown from an observer (hand-held), providing the scene with a disheveled, chaotic, and ambushed feel.
