Alice encounters a confusing world of Wonderland which
reflects the world of adults. The journey Alice goes through is a reflection on
how confusing the adult world can be. Everyone in Wonderland is mad except for
Alice. She tries to understand the ridiculous rules in the world of Wonderland.
Just how there are rules in the real world. By the end of the film Alice awakes
from her dream and is back in her world of reality. |
Alice has severe
PTSD and is put into a catatonic state for 10 years after the death of her
family from a house fire. She is put into an asylum for treatment which is
not a pleasant place. Alice makes an escape back to Wonderland, a place which
she dreamed of back when she was a child. She finds a very dark and gruesome Wonderland
which is ruled by the Queen of Hearts. The Queen has caused Wonderland to be
in a decline state. It is up to Alice to save Wonderland and stop the Queen.
Towards the end Alice defeats the Queen but soon realizes the Queen is herself.
The Queen tells Alice that dreamers are not allowed here in Wonderland and
expresses how this place is for grown-ups. In the end Alice saves Wonderland and
her mental state and leaves the asylum. In this version Wonderland is a reflection
of Alice herself, it takes place inside of her head. |
Social
History: Media
in the 1950s were trying to reinforce traditional gender roles. Particularly
towards women who were wanting to be in the workforce. The film never really
pushes for traditional gender norms. Though Alice is well mannered in the
film. |
Social
History: Media
in the 2000’s portrayed women as strong and independent. Alice in the game fights
and works her way to save Wonderland. She has a strong attitude and isn’t afraid
to stand up for herself. |
Ideology:
1950-
A women must remain polite and well mannered in any situation that is brought
out to her. |
Ideology: 2000- A women can
stand up for herself and achieve whatever goals she wishes or desires. |
For both of these films I think there is a preexisting historical context that says it’s not ok for women to have emotions or that women cannot have emotions period. A thesis I would suggest is that both of these films showcase the emotions of women and the manner in which that effects their persona and perspective. Alice finding happiness in Alice in Wonderland and Alice exploring her dark side in Alice.
