Adaption Semiotic Data Elaboration Blog Post Fresh Prince of Bel Air 1990 vs Bel Air 2022

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air - Rotten Tomatoes

Fresh Prince of Bel Air 1990:

Main Focus:  Will is an African American male from “the hood” moving to a predominantly white suburban area and he is constantly stereotyped.

Genre: sitcom/comedy

Social History:  This film essentially represents racism because the way dresses, acts, and portrays his self makes people think he’s a drug dealer, has no goals, or in a gang. This film also addresses other social issues such as ; feminism, discrimination, and social isolation.

Ideology:  This film shows how African American males that live in a predominantly white area are looked

Bel Air 2022:

Main Focus: To stop the discrimination and hate between upper-class and lower-class blacks

Genre: Drama

Social History:  In this film Will is framed with drugs and nobody believes those aren’t his drugs. They assumed it was him simply because of the background he came from and how he dresses. In this film I say the difference is they also represent greed with the character Carlton.

Ideology: We should never judge because of where they come from or how they look.

  1. Hi Chris! You have a lot of good information here to build up a argument for your speech. Between these two text I can already see the major difference between the two. In the 1990s version this story was made to be a comedy and address issues that African Americans face while living in a white suburban area based on how they look. in the 2022 verison its a much more serious appraoch to the problem. Instead of making it a comedy they made it into a drama. In this verison the goal is to stop the hate between both groups, which is interesting because the 1990s verison had no goal directly in the show to stop that. Though making the show was trying to do that from the outside. Basically the show decide to touch on this issue by showing it to its audience. The movie decides to do that in the film itself. What I would like to know and what would be interesting is to see how people felt about the 1990s show. Did it bring about change to African Americans living in the suburban areas? Did it slightly stop people from judging others based on how they looked? Or did the movie have more sucess in that area than the show did? Another thing you can add is how big of an issue is this today? Clearly it is still a big issue noting that they made a movie about it but did the film help bring awareness at all or no? Overall great anaylsis on your piece I wish you luck in building your final presentation.

  2. Hi Chris! You have an incredible framework to start building an argument! One of the major differences I notice is the genre switch from comedy to drama. The remake is subverting the genre mode from the original to address racial issues Black Americans experience while living in predominantly white neighborhoods. I love how Alyssa stated it, "Basically the show decided to touch on this issue by showing it to its audience. The movie decides to do that in the film itself." Much like her comment, the social impact of both is interesting. Impact of genre and impact of mode (tv vs. movie).

  3. The main focus for both the original concept and the 2022 version is well-described. It's clear that the central theme revolves around issues of discrimination and stereotypes. However, it might be helpful to briefly highlight how the 2022 version differs in focus from the original concept. For example, the 2022 version aims to address discrimination and hate between upper-class and lower-class Black individuals, which adds a new layer to the narrative. Both the original idea and the version from 2022 have a clear major focus. It is obvious that discrimination and stereotyping are the main points of the essay. It could be useful to briefly discuss how the 2022 version's focus changes from the initial idea, though. For instance, the 2022 version tries to address prejudice and hatred amongst Black people from upper and lower socioeconomic classes, which adds a new dimension to the story. The descriptions of the genres are clear and give a decent idea of the tone of the series. It would be useful to talk about how this shift in genre affects the storytelling and the audience's engagement with the topics for the 2022 version, which is classified as a drama. Both the original idea and the 2022 version effectively convey the point that it is crucial to avoid making snap judgments about others based on their upbringing or looks. However, you may elaborate on how these programs attempt to make this point. Are there any story points or character arcs that specifically highlight this ideology? Giving particular instances can strengthen the analysis. The analysis is well-organized and insightful overall. Consider adding specific examples from the series and elaborating on the effects of genre shifts on the storytelling to improve it. A direct comparison between the original idea and the 2022 iteration may also shed light on important issues.
