Love & Basketball

                                     LOVE & BASKETBALL ELABORATION NOTES

·      Monica in this scene is trying to win a big game where scouts are watching but, she ends up missing the winning shot and they lose the game.

·      The camera does a medium shot mostly

·      The camera will flip and be in her perspective as she is playing

·      When she looks at the stands it also does a close up on her boyfriend and the scouts separately

·      The exposure in the scene is the correct exposure

·      The camera stays else level mostly except for a few amount of times

·      There is some natural grain as well

·      Through the scene we get to hear inside her head while she is playing

Here you can see the correct exposure with a medium shot and grain. Here in this moment Monica just missed the winning shot.

Love & Basketball Table

Medium shot (MS)

Most of the scene

This was the main shot throughout the scene because she was playing basketball and there was a lot of action

Close up (CU)

4

The camera kept zooming in to certain people in the stands who were important the scouts, her parents, and her boyfriend.

Exposure

Correct

In this scene it always had the correct amount of exposure and lighting

Angle Low

4

The only time we say the angle as low was when it went to the people in the stands to give the effect that they were higher up in the stands.

Eye Level

Mostly in the scene

While Monica is playing basketball we get the angle at eye level.

Ped/Dolly

While Monica is playing basketball

When Monica was playing mostly when we saw the game from her perspective we would have the camera shake to make us feel like we were Monica.

Offscreen sound

When we were in Monica’s head or the crowd cheering

When we were inside Monica’s head when she was in the game we never saw her do all of her basketball talk.

  1. Depending one when this scene is (Im assuming it is in the begginning of the movie, because the main chracter never loses in the end), you could argue that they dramatisized this momment a lot because they wanted to emphasize how much this loss really matter to the film and the character. They want the viewer to feel some sort of anger or sense of revenge for the ultimate battle at the end of the movie, which she eventually wins (I think she wins in the end).

  2. Through notes and interpretation made by Monica, it is clear that the thesis/ main idea of the film is the pressure the main character is putting on herself to succeed. The camera moving from different perspectives, to show the severity of the scene shows just how important the entire game was. It is clear she is struggling mentally in order to compete, and play at her best due to scouts and her boyfriend watching, but she is unable to deal with the pressure and fails.

  3. From the notes you provided, I think that you could argue that the character's success is the main focus. With a lot of the techniques (close ups and low angles) that you mentioned, it seems like the character had a lot of pressure on her to win. I think that these techniques helped create a personal connection with the character, which allows the audience to feel the same pressure that the character was feeling in the scene.
