Adaptations blog post- The Scarlet Letter

Social History:

This wikipedia article gives the major themes of the work, and how sin was a big part of the work. Hester and Dimmesdale were hiding a secret not only from their Puritan village, but also from the eyes of God himself, causing the inner turmoil in Dimmesdale. It also talks about the Puritan Legalism and how Hester refused to conform to the Puritan beliefs and thus was cast out of the village.

This wikipedia article gives the synopsis of the movie, explaining how Olive got her as a promiscuous girl. The change in apparatus gives us an insight to how an average day “tramp” would dress and act and look. The change in social history also gives us a new look at the promiscuous girl, while back in the day the promiscuous girl was someone who slept out of their marriage, in this movie, vicious lies were told about our protagonist and in return, she began to dress and act as what the culture would dictate.
