Adaption Sources- Charlotte's Web

Adaptation Blog Sources- Charlotte’s Web
Genre:
This article’s focus is just to give general information about Charlottes web, the 1973 version.
This article talks about each character briefly. With the simple break down of each character, it is helpful to see what other people have noticed in those characters to use as a guide for my own project.
This is another simple Wikipedia article, but on the 2006 version. Two things this Wikipedia page talk about that are extremely useful are reception, and where the film was shot. In the reception part, it talks about how people during that time looked at the movie and what they thought about it. This will help me guide my research. Knowing all the different locations where the movie was shot is helpful because I can focus in on those locations and see if anything was happening during those times that could possibly mean something.

Social History:
1.     Long- Term Sociopolitical Effects of 9/11 Televison Viewing Emotions, and Parental Conversation in US Young Adults Who Were Children in 2001 (on Comm Library Database)
This article is very interesting. As I was thinking about what was going on during the early 2000’s 9/11 immediately came to mind. This article talks about the effects 9/11 had on people in my age bracket as well as a in depth description of a study that was done on people who were children when it happened. What I can take away from this source is the in depth analysis of the people involved in the study and how 9/11 effected them and use that to form my argument/ thesis. Another major thing it talks about is the Socio-political attitudes of the people involved in the study. One thing it mentions is that people who watched 9/11 on TV and other forms of media were more likely to think that the government can fail. This made me think that I could possibly talk about how Charlottes Web shows a happy county and American family that is so proud of this spider and pig and possibly gets kids back into thinking that’s really what all towns and cities in the US are like… which is far from what they’ve been seeing on TV reguarding 9/11.
2.     Effects on Terrorist Attacks on Students with Emotional Problems and Behavioral Disorders (Comm Library Database)
This article discusses the ways in which 9/11 effected children with certain disorders and emotional problems. One of the key points it makes is to have parents point out that the media may look bad, but to remember that even though it is portrayed really graphic, it isn’t as bad as it seems. Interestingly, Charlotte’s Web portrays towns and people to be happy go lucky and makes kids think nothing is wrong. Is it right to encourage them to ignore what’s really going on? I think for my argument/thesis this article is going to be really helpful in the sense that it shows how people are telling parents to literally sugar coat everything and make the world seem like the happiest, most perfect place.
This article will be purely used to give me insight on what different events were happening during the 2000’s leading up to when the remake of Charlotte’s Web was released.
This article will also be used purely to show me what was going on during the 1960s and will give me a better idea of how to frame my argument/thesis.
5.     Hollywood and the Rhetoric of Panic: The Popular Genres of Action and Fantasy in the Wake of the 9/11 Attacks (Comm Library Database)

This article is taking a different approach than what I have been thinking about doing, but that’s what makes it stand out to me. It talks about how the media and movies and Hollywood changed after 9/11. There was a spike in movies that revolved around action, scifi, and fantasy. Charlotte’s Web can be considered a fantasy and from other research, gives and idea of what people want America to look like post 9/11. It gives Americans hope and something to make them get their mind off of the reality of America- Post 9/11. This article will be good to help me form my thesis/argument as well.

  1. OK on history. You have nothing on genre here, really, just analyses of the text. Tell us about animated movies and live action movies for kids in a larger sense.
