Nick Fury in the 1960's was the leader of the howling Commandos while they fought in World War 2. He was shown as patriotic, as him and his team fight against the Nazis. Fury is also portrayed as a war junkie. He is wearing green as the army would along with bullets wrapped around his body. Fury is also not wearing any head protection while his team all have some sort of head gear. This could show Fury's courage or even his madness.
Nick Fury in today's Marvel's Avengers is the director of SHIELD. Which is a position of more responsibility. He looks much different today, obviously his race is the first noticeable difference. When Fury was fighting in World War 2, the US military at that time period in the comic was not desegregated. Unlike now where it is more common to see African-Americans in the military. Fury isn't dressed like a war hungry leader anymore. He is dressed in more casual clothing, with less firepower even though there is a full on battle going on behind them. He is more in the back while Captain America seems to be leading the fighting (while I have no idea what Black Widow is trying to do or what she's trying to look at). Both versions of Nick Fury have a very serious attitude along with always being surrounded by war related activities. Although they have that in common, there seems to be big changes to his character in the last 50 years.
Do you think there was some greater significance to changing Fury's race? Do you think putting him in the background, as a lesser to Captain America, may defeat this purpose?
ReplyDeleteAlong with what Erika said, I think you should go into detail about one of the differences and make more of an argument about it. Talk about why the changes were so big between the 50 year differences. Good information though :)
