The Wizard of Oz - 1939


  • Dorothy's house is sucked into a tornado and goes from Kansas to Wonderland. 
  • She is accompanied by her dog toto. 
  • Dorothy is a female and the first person she meets is the scarecrow. 




Oz the Great and Powerful - 2013

  • Oscar Zoroaster (Oz) was part of a traveling circus in the mid west. 
  • He tries to flee in a hot air balloon when he's then sucked into a tornado and arrives in the land of Oz. 
  • The first person he meets is Theodora, who later in the film becomes the wicked witch.

  1. This seems to be a good start. Some of your argument could be based on social changes that have happens throughout the production of the first Wizard of Oz versus the second creation. By using more apparatus, genre and social histories will give you a more clear direction as to where you will be headed in terms of your argument.

  2. This could be an interesting analysis since these stories are so different. However, you'll want to take your current analysis further by showing how the different stories represent the time in which they were made and analyze how the times have changed between now and then. You could look at why these two very different adaptations would have appealed to the specific audiences of their time. What has changed in our society since 1939 that makes us interested in a different take on the Wizard of Oz story? Good luck!
