I really like the comments about the light and the dark highlighting bad intentions of the boys. It seems the detail and dark lines are reserved for just the two boys who seem to be particularly interested in Karen while the other two fade into the background with their relative lack of lines and detail. Also the length of the panel and the composition of the boys creates a long moment of time displaying the horror of having to wait on such a terrifying experience. The calm before the storm. One interesting thing to note is the "GRRRRRR..." underneath Karen's face which I think not only illustrates to the audience Karen's willingness to fight, but also her monster form taking hold and protecting her. As is shown in other areas of the book, Karen's monster form is a fantasy that she uses to protect herself from the horrors of the world, and in a very real sense in this page from the horrors of the boys. These panel transitions are mostly action to action, thereby giving the close up on Karen's face as much emphasis (if not more than) the actual fighting itself.
