On a Sunbeam p.119

Panel:

1 (Page 119)
Abstraction Level:
4 for Grace, with a simple face that is much more than a dot with lines but lacks shading or emphasized texture. It’s hard to say for Mia, whose face isn’t showing, but I would give her ear a 4.
Line:
Soft down to the fingertips, with the exception of some pieces of Mia’s hair.
Transitions:
Action to action--Mia is starting to pull Grace towards herself
Time:
Fairly slow-moving, gentle, not weirdly long for the situation, but not in a hurry either
Word/Image Relationship:

Page 119 has no words. None of these panels have words. There is no relationship here.

2

Mia’s face here is made up of simple short lines, which I would put at 4. Perhaps it’s just because it’s next to Mia’s, but Grace’s face feels like a 3.5 now, with subtle blush, and a lower lip.

Again, the usage of line is soft, aside from certain little pieces of Mia’s hair. Even the stars that have now appeared in the background are just soft little dots.

Still action to action, as Mia, having pulled Grace in, kisses her cheek while Grace giggles (or at least smiles)

The time remains consistent here, with the same panel length and focus

Mia’s face isn’t visible here, as we’re seeing the back of her head. Grace’s face is partially obscured by her arms around Mia, but the lines here (while definitely emotive) are short little penstrokes, so 4.

Still almost all soft, but the tips of Mia’s hair are all sharp here. The stars from the previous panel disappear here, by the way.

The third and final panel of page 119 is still action to action, ending with Grace and Mia pulling each other into a hug, as tears appear in Grace’s eyes.

The rate of time continues to stay the same into the final panel of page 119.

  1. I think there aren't any words for these panels because we were meant to focus on the art of their intimacy. The action to action almost feels very moment to moment because of how undisturbed they are by any other characters or even words for that matter! Their intimacy is represented with smooth lines and curves, instead of being jagged and abrupt. The images really speak volumes for themselves because we see this as a moment between Mia and Grace that we don't see again until the very end when they come back together. I see it as very deep and on an apparatus level of time represented in the length of these panels.

  2. With it in not being any words in the panels it makes us focus on what actually is going on and forces us to find a deeper meaning and connection to them just off what we are seeing. But this is a very simple first page and its a good break down for it to not be much to see. The analysis you made from it is really great.

  3. This is a good analysis for a page with no words. This page does not need words, the lines and transition show the emotion and story of the scene. Good analysis.
