Black Panther Analyzation

In this scene, we start off with T'Challa in the rule of thirds with him facing away from the camera in the foreground and the car wreck in the background, blurred out. In the background we also see lots of lights of cars, lamps, and a bridge, which can be used to light the scene more naturally without making the viewer feel weird about it. The camera immediately shifts so we can see the front of him walking towards the wreck.

In the second shot, we have a chest level shot looking down at Klaue, showing T'Challa to be higher than him, a position of power, especially in film. For most of the rest of this shot, we are shown just the two of them while they are closer to each other and are arguing before Klaue is to be killed. Again, we have Klaue in another third with sim lighting on his face, and even less on Black Panther due to his suit also being black. Through their argument, they get heated until... the ladies show up.

This shot is where the tension is diffused and T'Challa realizes he was about to kill Klaue in front of a bunch of people who had their phones out recording everything. In this shot we have the ladies in the rule of thirds but there is also a lot of symmetry going on with them both in the same area on opposite sides. In this, we manage to see all of the people that have crowded the large accident and around the Black Panther to see if he really is going to kill this man out in the open, or if he is willing to kill a man who at this point is already defenseless and has already had his arm ripped off.

  1. I like how you get close to an argument, the tension is will BP kill him. What is setting up that tension is it well pulled of? Why should he kill him? Why he shouldnt? Klaue is this villain, but how does BP stand up morally to a hero like batman, who believes in recovery and is firmly anti killing. What does Tchalla do when the eyes of others challenge his actions.

  2. This is a good start for your blog. I like how you got into it and really pointed out the small details. I like how you made the arguement, will Black Panther kill the man. Like Isaac said about what is setting this tension ? What is the reason he is going to kill him? More background information would be helpful to answer these questions.

  3. Like Amanda said, this is a good start towards building your argument. I would go more in-depth on other film techniques and what they represent in the scene (Just like you did with the power position shot). For your main argument, the biggest question to ask yourself is how are you going to frame these scenes and what do you think they all accomplish as a bigger picture? Does this relate to violence in today's society perhaps? What moral obligations does T'Challa have and would it be ethical to kill someone who is "bad" (especially in a crowd like Isaac said). Just some things to think over for a potential argument.

  4. I really like your chart. Look into the edits and cuts throughout the scene. Think about the angles of the camera. think about what you see and what the character can see.

  5. I think you have some excellent information. I agree with Jamir, think about the angles and how that helps with the scene. You discussed the looking down and looking up, so that might be a good place to start.
