Analyzing The Black Panther Final Fight

In this scene Killmonger has resumed the throne after T'Challa's "death". However, he is not really dead. He was just in a coma and was awoken by the heart shaped herb from Nakia once they found him with M'Baku. Once he was awake he learns of Killmonger's plans to widely distribute the Wakandan's Vibranium weapons to the world. T'Challa immediately goes to fight for his rightful place as the king of Wakanda and to stop the mass distribution. He crashes lands and yells at Killmonger that the challenge isn't over and that he is ready to fight. W'kabi and his men charge T'Challa while Okoye and her women charge Killmonger. The battle is heated and a very tough fight. Then W'kabi summons the Rhinos and it seems as if T'Challa and Okoye are going to lose, until M'Baku and Jabari arrive to reinforce T'Challa. Simultaneously Ross remotely pilots a jet and shoots down the planes carrying the Vibranium weapons.

  1. You seem to be focused very much on the action of the scene, so what does it mean that these techniques are used as the Jet shoots the planes. As reinforcements arrive ask yourself how the filmakers want you to feel and are they effective? Does your heart race jump? are you on the edge of your seat when T'challa dies?

  2. Based on this chart, what interest you about this scene is the sheer scale of the fight. There are no less than three fractions duking it out, and every major character is carrying out their own individual mission. You mention the use of wide shots, the abundance of lighting, and the perpetual sound of clashing weapons and shouting warriors, and I think all of that is meant to illustrate how much is going on and particularly how much is a stake- any one of these multitudes can fail and die, and whoever is successful will determine the future of Wakanda.

What you don't mention, but I think you've clued in on, is how much this scene relies on cross- cutting. We jump from T'challa to Ross to Shuri and Nakia to Okoye who are all doing something completely different, but still in service of bringing the conflict to a conclusion. I think what you'll want to focus on is identifying what it is that connects these scenes. Is there anything in terms of action or composition that allows them to flow into one another? Are they sequenced in a logical way? In terms of script structure, this scene forms a section of the third act climax, thus, is this scene constructed with that trajectory in mind? Does it build upon itself? If the trajectory of the action is not linear, why would that be?

  3. I like how you focused on how the background noises bring up the scene in the movie. In this scene a wide angle was used to focus on the characters movements. I would bring up that this scene uses montage editing to show how different characters are being effected in this scene during the battle. When I looked up the scene I saw that they edited the sound to make a slow motion effect as soon as the black panther hits the ground with the match on action editing in this scene. I would use this example because it helps make sense to the clip you chose.

  4. Hello, I think a good suggestion would be to talk about how they portray how Killmonger feels when he sees T'Challa alive and well, or if they do not portray it then mention how they don't, going off of that you could then also talk about how W'kabi is also portrayed going against his old king he once thought was dead, is there hesitation? hatred? Basically if possible try to talk about how the scene portrays the characters during this time.
