Mulan Thesis

My thesis will focus on the difference between the 1998 film of Mulan and the 2020 Version. How they appeal to different audiences, the culturally correct things they have fixed about the movie, and how they made Mushu the hero in the first to take care of Mulan success. The points that i have said above will tie into genre and social history and im trying to find some concrete dates that different movements came out to strengthen those arguments. I will bring up the feminist movement and also the year of 2020 being woken up by BLM and how that ties into also being racially correct in this movie.

  1. You have a lot going on here, I would recommend bringing it down to one or two solid theses.

"How they appeal to different audiences"- What are the differences in the audience, and why would they need to change? Is it 2020's push to the Chinese market/an adult audience?

"Culturally correct things...BLM"- What has changed and why? This can tie back into different audiences somewhat, but it's important to understand why the change happened and the context around the time of each movie's release. Are we more open to seeing traditional Chinese culture on screen now than we were in the 90's? More culturally accepting?

"How they made Mushu the hero in the first...feminist movement"- This is an interesting one, as both movies occurred during "waves" of feminism. 1998 during the 3rd wave, and 2020 in the 4th wave (if you accept 4th wave feminism as separate and not a part of 3rd wave.) With that in mind, how has feminist thought shifted? Are there concerns important around 1998 that are no longer important now or vice-versa? How has our discussion on feminism and female empowerment changed in this time, and does that reflect in the movie? Lastly, are either of these versions of Mulan good feminist icons?

I think either of the last two could make for a good thesis/topic.
