Thesis for Charlie and The Chocolate Factory

My thesis will focus on how race and nationality is portrayed in the 1964 novel and 2005 movie of "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory." I will be speaking about implied stereotypes. I will also talk about how recent events and changing society affected the making of the novel and book. For example, the idea about "spies" in Mr. Wonka's Factory is attributed to The Cold War.

  1. I like the take on nationality and race! I didn't even think of that when I originally watched the movies, but it is definitely favored for one race specifically. This sounds pretty well structured from what I can tell. I would just think about why is one race or nationality specifically shown here? Is it because of location or is there a specific reason you feel as though there are really no colored people shown in the movies? Some things to just ponder while thinking about the movie overall.

  2. I agree with Jordan, but I would add one aspect. If speaking on implied stereotypes, it would be good to try and find information on the stereotypes present in the times of these movies and see if that has affected their portrayal. Also, if attitudes towards racism/stereotyping have changed over time, is this shown in the latter film?
