Aladdin (1992) vs Aladdin (2019)

Aladdin

Genre:

Romance

This article goes on about how Jasmine and Aladdin are the strongest "power couple" of all Disney movies and describes what elements of the story contribute to the romance. It talks about how Aladdin and Jasmine aren't initially forced to fall in love, they start off as friends and then fall in love. It also talks about how the personality of their character's aren't dependent on each other, making them both likable characters that become stronger together. Though the article focuses on the 1992 version of Aladdin, the concepts generally also apply to the 2019 adaptation of the movie.

Adventure

Aladdin falls under many different genres and I think adventure is one of the primary genres of the 2019 live-action adaptation of the movie. This article talks about the adventure genre and describes elements within the genre that I can find throughout the movie Aladdin. This article puts an emphasis on the idea that in the adventure genre, the protagonist, Jasmine, is being put against an environment or group of people, such as the sexist men in the kingdom.

Social History:

Aladdin 1992

This article goes through and explains the different sexist, racist, and even ageist ideologies presented through the original 1992 Aladdin cartoon. It talks about how Jasmine is extremely sexualized through her clothing, or lack thereof. The article also refers to Disney's constant assumption that women must be mature while the men can be young and dumb. Jasmine has to be strategic and cautious when considering Aladdin, but Aladdin, a male, gets to be a reckless thief who can somehow always find a way to avoid his consequences.

Aladdin 2019

In this article, the producer of the 2019 adaptation of Aladdin acknowledges some of the changes made in the movie to move towards empowering women. The producer claims, "We didn't think it held up in today's day and age of female empowerment." One of the biggest changes in the movie was giving Princess Jasmine her own song, "Speechless", where she refuses to go unspoken and unheard.
