Semiotics Land of the Lost

Land of the Lost was considered a popular show in the 1970’s and then in the 2000’s, the media remade it into a movie and put a comical spin on it.

The 1970’s was focused on the Environmental Movement, Mother Earth’s health, education and its exclusions, but also aliens!!! Aliens were first brought up around the 1920’s but it didn’t start to become popular until the 1970’s. Also, racism and the Civil Rights Movement was happening in the 70’s. I think the old Land of the Lost has the Sleestak to symbolize African Americans and to also have a “scary” aspect too, which is the alien looking creatures in my pictures above. I think there is a two in one that people fell in love with in the 70’s.
The old and the new version have a lot of similarities and some differences. The new one is a comical version of the television series because people now like comedy. Not just any comedy, but dirty, mean, sexual comedy. People now like the comedy that make other people feel bad such as racism. People also like things that are inappropriate such as having irregular sex on television. The only girl on the show is wearing tight shorts, with a shirt cut half way down her chest. The place they arrive at to time travel is a store that has boob coffee cups and other sexual demeaning products. Will encounters the females of Chaka's tribe, but rather than looking like primates, they appear as sexy, young, women, and a lot more examples.

In conclusion, I think there is a two in one symbolism in the Sleestak. They are symbolizing African Americans. They can’t talk, all they do is attack, there is a smarter leader, they aren’t intelligent, and none of the cast members seem to care for them. They just get in the way. They are also alien looking creatures which is more of a comical symbol now, compared to then.
