10 Things I Hate About You vs The Taming of the Shrew thesis by Aidyn Vargas

My thesis statement is going to talk about how the difference between these two works of art highlights the change in the way women were treated in relation to the time these were set. The original play, set in the 1590s, depicts women who have no voice and must subject to men. The remake, set in the 1990s, depicts strong female roles who have more power in their relationships.

  1. This definitely sounds about right when comparing the two different times together. One thing I might address is, are women still being somewhat oppressed in the new movie or do they seem to have more power than the men on set? You could relate this back to how our society today and I am sure it is a vast improvement from the 1500s, but there are things we still need to work on as I'm sure the movie itself might have presented. Seems like you know generally what you want to do though, which is great!

  2. I think you should also bring up dates that these movies came out around, as in dates other stuff was happening while these movies were popular if there is anything.

  3. Great start. You might consider observing the rolls/oppression of women in these specific time-frames and seeing how they interact with the text, possibly as a way to explain why they are so different. Is the original play a feminist narrative, at least for the time? If so, the analysis of 1500's feminism to 1900's feminism and how those are portrayed in the text could be very important here.
