Friday the 13th General Thesis

My thesis will be focused on how even though the original film featured a female character, the newer film actually has more women empowerment than what many people realize. This is through the fact that Pamela Vorhees, the original killer, was killed at the end of the original movie and was only based upon her motherly role as a character rather than having a true backstory. In the new movie, she is more powerful as she essentially controls the story and Jason. There is also a cultural shift of how sexual encounters were viewed within the movies. Although the cliche of sex gets you killed does not go away, it is presented more openly and commonplace in the newer movie which really signifies that the audience is now more accepting of such scenes in films and might even encourage them versus the 1980 version where people would root for the demise of those that scandalously had sex in the movies.

  1. I think it would be cool if you brought up like when it was okay for people to like not get canceled when they did anything that would be considered provocative, because it used to be shamed and then like at one point there was a shift when it turned to be edgy and cool.

  2. The sexual liberation angle intrigues me. How exactly does the shift occur in these movies, and does it coincide with societal narratives around sex?
