Charlie and The Chocolate Factory

Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (1964) & Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory (1971)

In the 1964 original novel, "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory", the nationalities of the children are not specified, only briefly implied through stereotypes. The german implied boy, Augustus, was decided as overweight. Dahl books tended to use "fatness as a symptom of nastiness". In the 1974 version, "Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory", the nationalities of the children are much more visible, connecting stereotypes to physical appearance. In the 1970's people still did not have ramifications for public fat shaming. In the book Mike is obsessed with gangster pictures, and in the movie he is obsessed with westerns, which poses a jab at America's obsession with firearms and violent television. In the book the Oompa Loompas are described as "African Pigmy People" and in the movie, they are orange with green hair.

BETTER ANALYIZATION WILL BE COMING TOMORROW. I am picking the book up at the library.
