Karate Kid(1984) vs Karate Kid(2010)

Karate Kid (1984) Vs Karate Kid (2010)

Issues of Adaptation

In the adaptation of Karate Kid with Jaylen Smith, one big difference is he moves across the world compared to Daniel LaRusso moving across the nation. This adds a different type of cultural change as he not only changes the type of culture but a completely new language as well as a new way of life. Another issue of the adaptation is it does not focus as much on the romance part of the movie like the original movie did. Another big difference is the characters in the adaptation are younger than the characters in the original film. The kids in the original are late in their high school years while the kids in the adaptation are not even in high school.

Ideology

The ideology of the original movie is that self defense or protecting someone else against minors was not a big problem as long as it was out of defensive. In the adaptation the ideology of self defense was very strict as not being able to put hands on minors. In the original movie Mr. Miyagi was protecting Daniel when he beat up the bullies and was not worried about putting hands on the kids to help protect Daniel. In the adaptation of the movie Mr. Han was helping Dre as he was running away from the bullies trying to beat him up and began to fight the kids but would not hit them because it was taught that adults can not hit minors.

Genre

The genre of the original movie is martial arts action and romance because of the fight scenes and the type of fighting they use. In the original they focus a lot of the movie on romance as Daniel is trying to win the girl over by beating Johnny in the final fight scene. The genre is the same for the adaptation but focuses more on the fighting and training more than the romance aspect like the original movie does.

Social History

A lot of time has passed between the release of the two movies and so has what has happened in history. One thing in history that has changed between the two movies release is the idea of putting hands on a minor. Now days, adults will get into a lot of trouble if they hit or even defend someone else against minors. This specifically happens when Mr. Han and Mr. Miyagi are defending the main characters because in the original Mr. Miyagi does not hold back and fights the bullies while Mr. Han uses the bully’s own fists to hit each other so he was not the one beating them up.

  1. great work! A thesis that can be another way in this topic is that how has the idea of self defense changed in films is is more important or not.
