Beyond the Lights

focal depth/

implied proximity

Closer to people’s faces seems more intimate and “about” the character, usually.

Note the way 3-point lighting works, first. The fill light removes shadows. The back light makes figures pop from the background.

Noni realizes her fame isn’t what she wants, and everything is falling apart. The lighting is focused on the pictures of Noni on the wall but also has a light coming from the top and bottom right side illuminating Noni. These light settings want us to see these giant pictures of her and all the fame it represents but show's how strong and angry Noni is, it’s a battle of her against her.

The camera comes in at a wide angle to show the stadium and the award ceremony. Noni is attending the BET Awards and performing. This shot showcases the big audience and her costar Mr. Kelly, which foreshadows something about to happen at the award show.

  1. Taylor, I really like the idea of the manner in which the wide angle contributes to foreshadowing; however, I think it means more than something is about to happen. Perhaps the foreshadowing could be a comparison to how when we look out our own lives from a "wide angle" perspective we can often tell that an impending event will completely alter our current reality.

  2. Taylor I like the scenes you picked and the message you pulled out of them. I wonder if you could find any scenes that foreshadow how she will not like where she is her career later in the movie. Maybe something that shows where she will be or why she turned out the way she did. I think could be a good argument or something that would be easy to present about.
